In 2014, an estimated 22.5 million Americans aged 12 and older self-reported needing treatment for alcohol or illicit drug use, and 11.8 million adults self-reported needing mental health treatment or counseling in the past year. These disorders are among the top conditions that cause disability and carry a high burden of disease in the United States, resulting in significant costs to families, employers, and publicly funded health systems. By 2020, mental and substance use disorders will surpass all physical diseases as a major cause of disability worldwide. According to the SAMHSA Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Initiative, drug and alcohol use can lead to other chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Addressing the impact of substance use alone is estimated to cost Americans more than $600 billion each year.

Description

The symposium will explore current concepts in in the treatment of mental health disorders as well as advances in pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of mental health and other associated chronic diseases. Sessions will include presentations on whole patient care and women's mental health, complimentary and alternative medicine, and advances in management of schizophrenia.

Current patterns of use and advances in treatment of substance abuse, including prescription and illicit opioids, and benzodiazepines will be presented. A special 3-hours session will meet the new CME requirements for Georgia physicians.

Target Audience

This program is intended for pharmacists, physicians, psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers wishing to improve their knowledge in the prevalence, diagnosis, and current treatment of mental health disorders.

Requirements

This knowledge-based educational activity has been approved for up to 15 hours (1.5 CEU) of pharmacy continuing education credit delivered over 4 sessions. In order to receive CPE credit, participants must attend the full session, participate in the active learning, and complete the online activity evaluation. No partial credit will be provided. All hours awarded will be submitted to CPE Monitor within 7 days of participant claiming credit.

Deadline to claim CPE credit is March 22, 2018.
