Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity the participant should be able to:
1.List common indications for total parenteral nutrition
2.Evaluate appropriate criteria used to assess the nutritional needs of a patient requiring TPN
3.Identify various methods used in designing a TPN regimen
4.Describe complications that may occur secondary to TPN and state how these can be minimized
5.Explore specific modifications in TPN regimens that may be necessary in the patient with pulmonary, renal and hepatic disease
6.Analyze the process of placing a patient on cyclic TPN
7.Build the information base needed to design a specialized nutritional support therapeutic
plan
8.Determine the presence of nutritional-related problems
9.Design specialized nutritional support therapy
10.Design monitoring plans for specialized nutritional support
11.Document nutritional support activities and outcomes in the pharmacy information system
12. Compare and contrast the infusion control devices and filters used in the delivery of specialized nutritional support
13.Develop new or modify existing TPN policies and protocols within a specific practice site
