At the conclusion of this certificate program, the participant should be able to:

1.List common indications for total parenteral nutrition
2.Describe appropriate criteria which must be evaluated to assess the nutritional needs of a patient requiring TPN
3.State various methods which are used in designing a TPN regimen
4.Describe complications which may occur secondary to TPN and state how these can be minimized
5.State specific modifications in TPN regimens which may be necessary in the patient with pulmonary, renal and hepatic disease
6.Describe the process of placing a patient on cyclic TPN
7.Build the information base needed to design a specialized nutritional support therapeutic plan
8.Determine the presence of nutritional-related problems
9.Design specialized nutritional support therapy
10.Design monitoring plans for specialized nutritional support
11.Document nutritional support activities and outcomes
12.Understand factors to consider when selecting infusion control devices and filters for use in specialized nutritional support
