Upon completion of the chapter, the reader will be able to:
1. Identify the diagnostic criteria for significant bacteriuria.
2. Describe the organism responsible for the majority of uncomplicated urinary tract infections.
3. Explain the three identified routes for bacteria to gain entry into the urinary tract.
4. Describe the signs and symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and how they differ in upper versus lower urinary tract disease.
5. Explain the laboratory tests that help in diagnosing patients with urinary tract infection.
6. Recommend an appropriate drug, dose, and duration for uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections.
